On behalf of Babson College and the Latin America Forum Committee, we thank you for participating and making the first Latin America Entrepreneurship Forum a great success.

A very special thank-you to the speakers, moderators and panelists for expressing their helpful perspectives and contributing to this regional forum. The views expressed were insightful, the debates productive, and we know we have all learned valuable knowledge about entrepreneurial opportunities in Latin America.

We want also to congratulate again our Rocket Pitch winners and wish them the best of luck in implementing their ventures. The winners were:

    1. Yo Reciclo – Hector Elizondo
    2. PayFacile – Marc Saint Clair
    3. New Venture Development – Luis Soto

Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors, without whom we would be unable to create this event:

    • The William .F. Glavin Center for Global Management
    • The Arthur M. Blank Center for Entrepreneurship
    • Babson Career Center for Development
    • The Student Government Association
    • The Graduate Student Council

    Grupo Santander

    Grupo Santander

Babson College and Grupo Santander have a commited relationship of collaboration since 2007 that seeks to “foster entrepreneurial spirit amongst universities”. The financial giant and Babson have several initiatives together, but perhaps the most interesting from the Latin American point of view is the following:

Banco Santander’s contribution is also used to fund some or Babson College’s research. In particular, the GEM report on entrepreneurial culture and attitudes in Latin America, the most recent issue of which was published in Chile.

We’ll follow closely the relationship between this important bank and our school. An official press release can be found here.

Our good friend Peter Rovick was so kind to point us to this NPR show about how the crisis is hitting Latin America, with all its own problematic issues. The show is hosted by Tom Ashbrook and guests are Joby Warrick, intelligence reporter for The Washington Post, Ricardo Avila, editor-in-chief of Portafolio, a daily financial paper published in Colombia and John Price, managing director for business intelligence at Kroll Associates.

You can listen to the show online: http://www.onpointradio.org/shows/2009/03/latin-america-and-the-global-crisis/

Each one of us can learn something from Warren Buffet. Here is part of one of his 2009 letters.

Every new year, I adopt a couple of old maxims as my beacons to guide my future. This self-prescribed therapy has ensured that with each passing year, I grow wiser and not older. This year, I invite you to tap into the financial wisdom of our elders along with me, and become financially wiser.

    * Hard work: All hard work bring a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.
    * Laziness: A sleeping lobster is carried away by the water current.
    * Earnings: Never depend on a single source of income. [At least make your Investments get you second earning]
    * Spending: If you buy things you don’t need, you’ll soon sell things you need.

We are most definitely proud of both Babson College PR and Len Schlesinger, our president.

The members of the Latin America Business Club at Babson are also fans of Tina Fey.

    Enjoy the article…

    Release Date: 1/14/2009

Babson President Schlesinger Invites Tina Fey To Be Commencement Speaker

Tina Fey expressed irritation at the Golden Globe Awards ceremony over comments posted online by “BabsonLacrosse”.  Babson College shares Fey’s emotions and has invited her to visit the campus for a true Babson experience. [Click the following link to see Tina Fey's comments:Tina Fey at the Golden Globes Ceremony 2009]

“Babson College, including our lacrosse team, would like an opportunity to show you firsthand how our community genuinely feels about you,” said President Schlesinger in a letter to Fey.  “I can say with confidence that you have many fans on campus (I am one of them) and, since your comments at the Golden Globe awards ceremony, we have had a lively discussion about what we could do to show you that we admire and value your many achievements.”

“To that end, I am pleased to invite you to speak at our 2009 Commencement on Saturday, May 16th.  I know that our undergraduates and their families would be interested in your advice and your “take” on the world they are entering as young adults,” Schlesinger wrote.

Babson has been named the #1 school for entrepreneurship by U.S. News and World Report for as long as they have been ranking entrepreneurship programs, and has also been named a leading college for women by The Princeton Review and CosmoGirl magazine.  “Creativity is at the core of how we teach entrepreneurial thought and action–and we would be pleased to learn from you, one of the most creative stage and screen personalities of our time,” Schlesinger wrote.

Schlesinger has issued an official proclamation of Babson College’s support for Fey.  (He’s also joined her Facebook fan page!)

    End of 2008

Posted In: General by Luis Duarte

We now reach the end of another year. Time is kind enough to give us an opportunity to look back and learn  from each of the decisions we made throughout the year; the start of an MBA program, the election/search for an internship, the initiative to meet new people and learn new things…

Dear all, we thank you for the support and energy you brought to the club; we surely expect to see the same engagement for next semester.

Please enjoy this break and keep sharing with us those ideas or events that you’d like to see organized by your club.

Wishing you a joyful holiday and expecting to see you in January 2009,

The Babson Latin America Business Club
